The Adventures of Emily and Laura Continue...

Saturday was a nice, slow morning followed by a trip over to Aladdin’s palace, otherwise known as Arab St.  We walked through the beautiful shops, admiring all the lush fabrics just waiting to be made into dresses for some lucky girls.  We each took turns pointing out our favorite blends of colors on display.  Though neither of us mentioned it, I think it’s safe to assume that we were both wishing to walk in and let a dress maker create an extraordinary dress for us and then go off to some snazzy event looking like a million bucks.

Once we had our share of fabrics, we settled down at my favorite restaurant Beirut Grill for some hummus and kebabs.  And thankfully my recommendation for our meal was spot on!  (I guess that means I’m a Singaporean foodie).  New to me this time around was fresh lime juice.  It was the perfect complement to our meal and would also be a great companion with tequila if I might add.  Once we had filled up, we walked some more around the shops before heading back to soak up some afternoon sunshine by the pool.

Saturday night the long travel had finally caught up with Emily and though we had plans out on the town, it was better to just have a low key night in.  The trip to Singapore is LONGGG no matter which way around the earth you go and I was shocked that the weight of that kind of travel didn’t wear on Emily until Saturday.  If you think about it, not only is it just readjusting your sleep pattern but your body needs to get used to doing daytime activities in its usual nighttime.  It’s common for people to not be hungry and super tired at first.  But overall I must commend Emily for jumping right into the routine of the time change and only needing this one super chill night.

Sunday started out with more sunshine by the pool with books and bubble tea.  The funny part about people here is that cloudy days bring people to the poolside whereas sunny days everyone is hiding inside with the aircon or under an umbrella if they dare to walk outside.  This meant that we basically had the whole pool to ourselves.

Once we had soaked up enough sunshine, we headed to Chinatown for some browsing and souvenir shopping.  It was fun walking through the Chinatown streets as there were plenty of New Year decorations all around.  Chinese New Year is in mid-February and though I’m not going to be here to celebrate there is plenty to see before.  We stopped at the chopsticks store so I could find some to bring home with me as well as some beautiful prints.  After a walk through and picking up some goodies, we made our way over to Clark Quay for a quick bite and drink at Brewerkz.

We had spent a long time in the hot, humid sun so once we got back to my apartment we freshened up and laid low until our evening plans.  Sunday night dinner was something I was most excited to share with Emily.  I made reservations for us at Jumbo Seafood to enjoy a scrumptious, traditional Singaporean meal of black pepper crab!  We took a taxi over to East Coast park where the restaurant is located and arrived with enough time beforehand to have a nice little walk along the water.  From this park, you can usually see Indonesia across the way, but unfortunately it was too hazy to see anything but the HUGE ships chilling just off the shore.  It becomes very apparent of how much is imported into Singapore when you see hundreds of boats always lining the shore.

Then it was time to get our hands dirty!  We shared some delicious garlic kai lan, seafood fried rice, and the star of the show was the Sri Lankan Crab in black pepper sauce.

The aftermath of the delicious dinner!

I made sure we each had on our respective bibs and had our hair pulled away from our face.  All electronics were put away in our purses and the wet naps were open ready for the aftermath of what was to happen.  And finally Emily got to experience the wonderful deliciousness that is black pepper crab.  This is a hands on experience, there is no fancy way to eat this.  While the restaurant kindly breaks the crab into a few pieces, there is still plenty of work for the customer.  Oh boy was this meal just amazing as always!  And thankfully Emily was just as in heaven as I was!  The weather was beautiful and even cool for Singapore standards (think 79 degrees) and there was a slight breeze.  The night was just lovely!

Next up I finally take Emily to the one place she wanted to go in Singapore!
