Making the most of Fall in New England

Well Fall is officially upon us here in the US.  Wednesday marked the first official day of Fall and Massachusetts is well on its way into embracing the season of pumpkin everything.  However this year, especially, it seems that most New Englanders have already started talk of winter and the fear of another snow monster season seems to be looming over everyone.

BACKKKK UP NEW ENGLANDERS!  Let’s not let a bit of cold water quell our spirits, eh?

Let’s instead start thinking of ways to enjoy the new season upon us and how to keep us from entering into a premature hibernation for winter!

Fall in New England is absolutely beautiful and there are a number of ways to experience its splendor.

Quick Fixes:

1.       Pumpkin Spice Coffee– this quick fix is simple way to make you feel that Fall warmth even if you’re on your way to the office.
Fun tip: when making a pot of regular coffee, sprinkle ground cinnamon and nutmeg with the coffee grounds and brew.  It saves you money and ensures you’re using wholesome ingredients!
Not a coffee fan?  Try Tazo Tea Sweet Cinnamon Spice <my current obsession!

2.       Cider Donuts – the best are fresh from a farm, but most grocery stores carry them these days making it easily accessible to get another yummy Fall fix.
Tip: Russell Orchard in Ipswich, Ma has by far the best cider donuts, do yourself a favor and wait for a fresh batch!

3.       Check out the farmers market – look up to see if there’s a local farmers market near you.  They’re usually held on Saturday mornings and are a great way to support local farmers as well as to get fresh, seasonal produce.

Check out that bounty of farm fresh produce!

Single day activities:

1.       Apple Picking – have a few hours to spare?  Apple picking is a great way to enjoy the comfortable fall weather and to try out different types of apples you may not have tried.

2.       Hiking – whether it’s a stroll through a park or hiking to a good viewpoint, hiking is perfect this time of year due to the cooler temps and beautiful fall foliage!  Make it fun and pack a few drinks and snacks to enjoy when you get to the top.

3.       Beer Festivals – no need to travel to Germany for Oktoberfest!  The craft beer movement has hit the US and that means there’s more than enough beer here in the US to keep most people happy.  Beer festivals are popping up all over the place.
Fun Tip: This weekend check out the Cape Cod Brew Fest and be sure to stop by PubGearUSA’s booth for a chance to win a bar, YES I MEAN A HANDCRAFTED BAR TO TAKE HOME!  How cool is that?!

Get outa town ideas:
1.       Optimize shoulder season – always wanted to stay at one of those swanky hotels close to a cool town?  Well now is the time to book it!  Shoulder season means the same great places for reduced rates so don’t shy away from checking out places like Martha’s Vineyard or Cape Cod just because the high beach season is over.  Bonus: besides saving lots of $$, there will be much less people meaning no lines or reservations needed for popular spots.
Tip: check out Groupon for great weekend deals at hotels.

2.       Look out for cheap flight tickets – keep your eye out for flight deals to cities not too far from you.  It’s easy to make a quick weekend trip somewhere when the flight is only 3 hours long!

3.       Go to college  - ok this probably sounds odd but school is back in session and what better way to relive your glory days than to head back to campus!  Think about it, college minus homework equals FUN.  Get some of your buddies together and go back to campus to enjoy your favorite hangout spots.
Tip: plan around a sporting event such as football, hockey, or basketball to ensure it’ll be a fun weekend.
Go UMass!

Whew!  That should be enough to keep you busy for at least a little while.  As for me?  I’ll be taking advantage of super cheap airline tickets for a quick weekend getaway with some of my favorite girlfriends!

Questions of the day:
